A 37-year-old Iowa mother is facing serious charges after allegedly framing her husband for shooting her and later abandoning two young children—one with special medical needs—on the side of a busy road, telling them that “nobody loved them.”
Heather Ann Perez Miranda was arrested in Linn County and now faces multiple charges, including child endangerment, neglect, domestic abuse, and filing a false police report.
The shocking case began when police responded to a call on June 30, 2024, about two unattended children, ages 6 and 8, found near a busy street in Hiawatha, about 120 miles east of Des Moines. The older child, who has a congenital jaw deformity and had a tracheostomy, requires special care.
According to police, Perez Miranda forced the children out of her truck, told them no one loved them, and then drove away, leaving them stranded near a highway—about eight miles from home. Meanwhile, her four other children, whom she shares with the children’s father, remained in the car.
Investigators later learned that earlier that day, Perez Miranda had been in an argument with her husband, during which she allegedly punched him. After he left to stay at a hotel, she was left alone with the six children.
When questioned, Perez Miranda initially claimed she had dropped the abandoned children off with their father at a campsite. However, surveillance footage and witness statements proved otherwise, leading to her arrest in September 2024.
Adding to the disturbing case, Perez Miranda had also falsely accused her husband of shooting her. On August 28, she told police he had shot her while they were in a camper at Morgan Creek Park. Although she did suffer a gunshot wound, investigators found that the bullet’s trajectory didn’t match her story. Surveillance footage also confirmed her husband was with their children elsewhere at the time.
Police have not said who they believe shot Perez Miranda, but they confirmed they are not looking for any other suspects.
Now, she remains in custody as she faces multiple charges for her actions.
