The sheriff wrote that Montague had sustained multiple gunshot wounds on Feb. 9 and was lying on the ground outside of his home, which he shared with his mother.
“Montague and Evans were reportedly involved in a volatile relationship,” Gonzalez wrote on social media, adding that the murder had “possibly [stemmed] from jealousy.”
According to local outlets KHOU and ABC 13, investigators allegedly found video of Evans’ car leaving the scene early in the morning on Feb. 9, around the same time that witnesses reported hearing gunshots.
Per ABC 13, Evans allegedly confronted Montague about messages from another woman the night of the murder. Police told KHOU that Evans confessed to killing Montague during questioning.
Evans appeared in court on Wednesday, Feb. 12, and ABC 13 reported that the presiding judge reprimanded her after she yelled out in the courtroom.
“You claimed Mr. Montague grabbed at you, grabbed at your jacket … but you then shot Mr. Montague five or six times,” the judge told Evans, per ABC 13. “Ma’am, please be quiet and listen to me. I’m telling you what the police report says in front of me.”
Gonzalez wrote that Montague was a “decorated Army veteran” and had been working for Amazon at the time of his death.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, Feb. 15.
According to Harris County jail records, Evans’ bond was set at $250,000, and she is next due in court on April 3.
